Auckland hall residents enjoy Olympic viewing together
At the end of July Massey University Auckland accommodation purchased Sky Sport on their TV for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Teegan Jessop, resident of Tui Hall was thrilled, as it makes her feel like she’s there alongside the athletes.
“It’s a fun experience because you have a community and a little bit of spirit like when you’re sitting with your friends, and they may be cheering for another athlete and you’re like who’s going to win?”
Additionally, with the recent purchase of Sky Sports, the Te Rito Building has adjusted their standard hours of 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM to earlier hours of 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM for viewing the many events that happen in the early morning.
Rilee Spooner, resident of Tui Hall said by Te Rito changing their hours to open earlier helps those who want to watch the earlier sports as then they have access.
“It also brings together people who you weren’t friends with to begin with,” Spooner said.
The Olympics had sparked a blend of residents coming into Te Rito Hall to view the sports being broadcasted live.
A Massey Halls Auckland team spokesperson said that they’d observed a diverse group of residents from around the world tuning in, with many eager to watch and support events featuring their home countries.
And while residents in the various accommodation's buildings have been enjoying the live broadcast of their home countries in Te Rito, staff have also enjoyed the chance to watch the Olympics in live time.
The spokesperson said, “While our accommodation staff are often occupied with their daily duties, they’ve been enjoying watching various events during their lunch breaks to keep up with our athletes.”
“They’ve enjoyed being able to offer residents the opportunity to view the global event, as it’s something everyone can relate to and enjoy.”
