Voting for the student election begins following cancellation

Elections for a new group of student representatives has begun for Te Tira Ahu Pae, Massey’s student association, following the cancellation in October.

The elections come early this year as the association was forced into cancelation last year due to a not-fit-for-purpose representation model.

The association plans to build a new student representation structure by the end of year. In the meantime, a new group of reps will be elected under the current representation model.

Current rep Micah Geiringer acknowledged that students have historically been disengaged with Massey student politics.

He said a prominent reason was that the association appoints the president and vice-president roles, rather than allowing the student body to vote.

“I can appreciate that students don’t want to vote in the elections if the ‘top-dog’ positions are not chosen by a democratic system.”

Nevertheless, he still asked that all students vote, “your experience at this university is directly tied to how well your student representatives can do their jobs”.

He said the university was experiencing profound change through the influence of AI, the transition of study from internal to distance, and the resourcing of academic staff.

“If you're unhappy about the way Massey is handling AI — these elections are important for you. If you're unhappy with nursing papers being made online — these elections are important for you. If you are enrolled to study at Massey — these elections are important for you.”

“It is absolutely necessary that student representatives have the mandate to represent when it comes to affecting how the university works, and that mandate is earned through the vote.”
