Massey vice-chancellor Jan Thomas resigns with a year’s notice

After eight years of leading Massey University, vice-chancellor Jan Thomas announced on Wednesday that she will step down from the role.

The public seemed pleased about Thomas’ resignation, with comments on Massive's announcement post including "Good riddance” and “Yiipeee".

In a press release, Thomas said she appreciated that it takes considerable time to replace a vice-chancellor, which is why she has given a year’s notice.

Thomas said, now that the university has stabilised its finances and is on course for a solid future, it is good timing to give someone else the opportunity to lead Massey through its next phase.

Thomas has worked to improve Massey’s financial situation. The year ending December 2024 was forecasted to have a budget deficit of $30 million, however achieved a $3.7m surplus.

Thomas has also infamously seen the university through over 500 course cuts, over 100 job cuts, and the downsizing of property.

Thomas said, “I want to sincerely thank the Senior Leadership Team and the hard-working staff at Massey who have made the university the respected and loved institution it has become after almost 100 years of existence.”

Massive requested an interview with Thomas, however, were told she would not be doing interviews at this time.

Chancellor Alistair Davis said the recruitment process will begin immediately, however, an appointment isn't likely to be announced until late this year at the earliest.

Davis thanked Thomas for working to future proof Massey University, noting the financial improvements.

Davis said, “We appreciate that Jan has faced and worked through many difficult challenges to lead the university and put it on a strong footing, ensuring a very focused institution for the next Vice-Chancellor.”
