Hooked on drama
First year student Haleigh Hook is ‘killing it’ with her acting after performing in the Massey University Drama Societies (MUDS) latest show, ‘Under pressure’.
MUDS have hosted a trio of one act plays over the start of May, where Haleigh took to the stage for Act Two.
“My act was about societal control and whether you should question your beliefs and stand up for what you believe in,” she said.
The 18-year-old started her theatrical journey at 5 when her much older sister dragged her along to rehearsals for her high-school shows.
“She had her year 13 production and I did the opening act for it which was baby-shark. So that’s what started it,” Haleigh explained.
Haleigh has gained a reputation for herself after impressing crowds with her ability to make her deaths seem life-like.
“I’d say she’s amazing at dying on stage,” said fellow MUDS member Matt Schaw.
In her limited spare time Haleigh gets lost in her writing.
“When I write it’s like making a performance that someone else can make their own picture of in their heads,” she said.
“I like writing to a point that is so vivid that someone else can see it.”
With an added interest in film, Haleigh said performing is like another form of escape.
“It’s fun to play someone else and get to have a different life for a little while.”
